The DSM’s changes have impacted homosexuality and PTSD because homosexuality was first considered a mental illness, and PTSD has filled a void in history in understanding cognitive behaviors. In 1980 it was taken out of the DSM and rewritten as gender dysphoria. The impact of homosexuality on the DSM is how to classify this condition as normal or abnormal. PTSD was considered an abnormality since it is a condition that is obtained by a traumatic event.
Homosexuality and PTSD have changed mental health current concepts resulting in revisions of the DSM. Homosexuality is now considered acceptable, and people feel comfortable living gay. PTSD has now filled a role in understanding behaviors that would not have been. PTSD seemed to carry the stigma of weakness.
The impact on clinical practice is that diagnosis has been changed due to the destigmatization of cultural attitudes( for being a homosexual). Assume fewer do not commit suicide. However, persons who have PTSD are getting better care because doctors understand it better.
The concept of research trends in DSM applies to Social Justice, Homosexuality and PTSD have evolved through social justice. The destigmatization and acceptance of civil rights and balance should have caused these two issues to be culturally accepted and understood.
